The military tried to intimidate Mgr Lopes. There were death threats and attempts on his life – hair-raising incidents in his car on the streets of Dili. It was part of the atmosphere of fear that all East Timorese endured. His outspokenness made him a target but his prominent position gave him some protection.

Dr James and Professor Therese D’Orsa have worked closely with Bishop Hilton Deakin to write up his recollections of his involvement in East Timor’s struggles for independence from the 1970s. The memoirs focus on the activities of Catholic Church figures and include new detail about the role played by Australian and other governments during this tumultuous period. The Yarra Institute is looking for a major publisher for this landmark work, which will be ready by publication later in 2014.
